Iconic area to explore: Windhoek City Center which is close to Christuskirche Independence Memorial Museum and the historical Alte Feste.
Best way to learn about the city: walking tours that explore the history of Namibia’s city.
Amazing local food experience: tasting traditional Kapana barbeque.
The city may not be the main reason travellers visit, but Windhoek offers a relaxing start to your safari adventure, or a relaxing end, depending on what you prefer. It is grounding and magical to walk through a city and feel immersed by its history, getting to know its wildlife and local culture.
One of the best ways to explore the fascinating history and cultural diversity of Windhoek is by venturing on guided tours and excursions throughout the city. These day trips make for unforgettable scenic escapes.
City Tour (3 hours): explore colonial-era architecture that seamlessly blends in with the modern city life, historic buildings, and markets. The tour includes a trip to Katutura and Khomasdal as well.
Gocheganas Nature Reserve and Health Spa (full day): trade the city for a day of game drives, nature walks, birdwatching and a tranquil spa treatment.
Scenic flights (from 3 hours): soar the skies and take in Namibia’s scenic landscapes, including the Namib Desert, Etosha National Park, Sossusvlei Dunes and the Atlantic coastline.
Etosha National Park trip: excursions to Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuary is a must to take in its wildlife and nature.
Swakopmund day excursion: take in the seaside charm and explore Swakopmund’s museums, Walvis Bay Lagoon and the dunes.
Sossusvlei day excursion: take in the magnificent sight of the Naukluft Mountains, Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon.

Alte Feste Museum
Like in any city, there is much you can learn from its museums and attractions. Windhoek is a place of rich history, and is a perfect addition to your safari experience.
Alte Feste Museum: It is the oldest still standing building in Windhoek and served as a German Fort in the time of the colonization.
Christuskirche: The most iconic landmark of the city is also one of the main tourist attractions
St. George’s Cathedral: the world’s smallest cathedral (still in use).
State House: the official residence of the Namibian president.
Tintenpalast: the parliament building also known as the striking Palace of Ink.
Zoo Park: a beautiful garden in the city center, filled with fountains and memorials.
National Botanical Gardens: take a walk alongside Namibia’s flora, including aloe, bottle trees and milk bush.
Interact with giraffes at Volgtland Guesthouse: feed giraffes while having lunch, breakfast or even a high tea.
Explore Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary: take a cheetah walk or a carnivore feeding tour.
Best Time To Visit
Sossusvlei, Namibia
The dry winter months, between May to October, are considered the best time to visit Windhoek. The skies are clear and temperatures are pleasant which are perfect for touring the city and day trips in and around the city. The evenings can be chilly so make sure to carry a jacket.
The wet season, from November to April, is when the landscape flourishes in greenery, with very hot afternoons and sudden downpours that can affect your touring. It does promise lower rates, less crowds and is a great time for bird watching.

I get it, Windhoek is not always the main attraction when visiting Namibia, but it does make for a great addition to your safari adventure.
