Timing Your Adventure: When to Go

While you can trek to see gorillas year-round, the timing of your trip can change your experience significantly:

  • The Dry Seasons (January–February & June–September): This is the optimal time for trekking. You’ll enjoy sunnier days and drier trails, making the steep hikes much easier to navigate.
  • The Wet Seasons (March–May & October–December): Expect mud and slippery slopes, but don’t let the rain deter you! This “lower season” offers lush, vibrant scenery, fewer crowds, and the gorillas often stay at lower altitudes, which can lead to shorter treks.

What to Expect on Trekking Day

Your day begins at 7:30 AM at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) headquarters. After a briefing on gorilla etiquette and safety, you’ll be assigned to a specific gorilla family based on your fitness level.

  • The Hike: You will be led by expert UWA guides and trackers through dense vegetation and rugged terrain. The trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours.
  • The Magic Hour: Once you find the family, you are granted exactly one hour in their presence. It’s a time to put the camera down (occasionally!), breathe, and observe their incredibly human-like behaviors.

Quick Tips for a Successful Trek

  • Hire a Porter: We highly recommend hiring a local porter (approx. USD 15–20). They assist you on slippery slopes and carry your pack, while your contribution directly supports the local community and conservation.
  • Dress for the Jungle: This isn’t the place for shorts and flip-flops. Long sleeves, trousers tucked into socks, and sturdy hiking boots are essential to protect you from thorns, stinging nettles, and “safari ants.”
  • Health First: Because gorillas share 98% of our DNA, they are highly susceptible to human illnesses. You will be asked to wear a mask when close to the gorillas, and you must be in good health to trek.

Respecting the Giants: Encounter Etiquette

To keep both you and the gorillas safe, there are strict rules in place:

  • Maintain a distance of at least 7 meters (21 feet).
  • No flash photography—it alarms the animals.
  • Keep your voice low and never attempt to touch a gorilla.
