Unparalleled Wildlife Encounters in Greater Kruger:
Embark on an extraordinary Wildlife Photography & Conservation Project in South Africa’s Greater Kruger Area, combining a passion for photography with vital conservation work. This transformative journey allows you to master African wildlife photography skills under professional guidance, capturing iconic species like the Big 5 and stunning landscapes. Your photographs directly support conservation by aiding animal identification and population monitoring, while you also engage in physical conservation tasks such as invasive species removal. The program is an award-winning volunteer abroad experience, offering comprehensive support including accommodation, meals, and expert staff. It’s an opportunity to develop unique skills and leave a lasting legacy in wildlife protection
Prepare to be captivated by the untamed majesty of your project destination: the Greater Kruger Area, South Africa. This isn’t merely a location, but a sprawling, vibrant tapestry of over 20 private reserves that seamlessly border the world-renowned Kruger National Park, comprising almost 5.5 million acres of unfenced land where animals roam freely across wild savannah. Here, your lens will capture an extraordinary array of threatened species, offering endless opportunities to photograph the iconic African Big 5 (lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo), alongside diverse antelope, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, giraffe, zebra, and countless bird species. Imagine the thrill of elephants joining you for dinner or the primal sounds of hippos at night, with the Olifants River directly in front of the project’s base camp acting as a magnet for abundant wildlife, providing prime photographic moments right on your doorstep. This destination guarantees not just stunning photographs, but profoundly transformative wildlife encounters in one of Africa’s most biodiverse and significant conservation regions.
Prepare for an unforgettable immersion into the African wilderness at Kambaku II Camp, your authentic bush lodge in the heart of the Greater Kruger Area. Designed for both comfort and a true sense of adventure, this traditional camp offers seven spacious dorm rooms, each equipped with air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, providing a private sanctuary after exhilarating days in the bush. Wake up to breathtaking views overlooking the Olifants River, a prime wildlife hotspot where you might spot elephants, hippos, and a myriad of bird species right from your doorstep.
Our local chefs at Kambaku II Camp keep you energized with delicious and nutritious meals served 7 days a week, featuring authentic South African cuisine like bobotie, potjie, and Cape Malay-style curry. Twice a week, experience the thrill of a traditional South African braai (BBQ) cooked over an open fire in our welcoming outdoor fire pit, a perfect setting to share stories under the starlit sky within a great shared social space, complete with a swimming pool for cooling off.
Your journey begins and ends seamlessly with airport transfers from Hoedspruit Airport (HDS), just a 75-minute drive from Kambaku II Camp. Arrive and depart anytime on your designated Sundays, and you’ll be greeted by a friendly welcome. Stay connected with WiFi available throughout the lodge. For those seeking local cellular connectivity, MTN is recommended for purchasing a South African SIM card.
You’ll be guided and supported by an exceptional team, including our dynamic Photography Coordinator, Anique van der Kuil. Anique, a Bachelor’s Degree holder in Creative Business, brings a unique blend of creative thinking and image capture expertise. Her journey started as a volunteer in this very Greater Kruger Base, igniting her passion for conservation and visual storytelling. Her captivating content has even been featured by BBC Earth and Canon South Africa, offering unparalleled mentorship in visual storytelling and ethical photography.
Your safety is paramount. Our qualified Field Guides are extensively trained in wildlife encounters and hold valid driver’s licenses. All vehicles are well-maintained and fitted with radios for constant contact with base camp. Our project is committed to safeguarding volunteers, staff, and the environment, with a team trained in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) competencies. The base is equipped with fire safety equipment, evacuation plans, and has access to an ambulance service. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is provided for physical conservation work, and a comprehensive induction upon arrival ensures you are fully aware of all policies and procedures for a secure and impactful experience.
