Our journey kicks off with a 1:00 PM orientation meeting at the AHA’s Harbour Bridge Hotel . From there, we set out with our guide to trek Table Mountain. Formed more than 280 million years ago, this landmark forms part of one of Earth’s eight prime biodiversity hotspots. Reaching the summit rewards you with panoramic vistas over the Cape Town City Bowl, while fine weather offers a distinct view out toward Robben Island—famous for holding Nelson Mandela captive for nearly two decades.

The following morning takes us along the dramatic coastline of the Cape Peninsula. Our route stops in the quaint seaside village of Hout Bay before continuing to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, where craggy cliffs jut out into the Atlantic across waters shifting from bright turquoise to rich navy. Spanning roughly 7,750 hectares of protected terrain, the reserve shelters an abundance of indigenous plants and wildlife; keep an eye out for coastal-grazing bontebok, Cape mountain zebras, and thriving herds of eland.

After freshening up back at the hotel, the group heads to the lively V&A Waterfront for an evening of food and entertainment.

Leaving the Mother City behind with a final panoramic view of Table Mountain from across the water, our route heads north across the Swartland and follows the Atlantic coastline into Namaqualand—a unique ecosystem shaped by the chilly breezes of the Benguela Current. While arid for much of the year, winter rainfall triggers an extraordinary springtime spectacle, carpeting the plains in countless wildflowers and diverse succulents to make it a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot. The day’s journey winds through shifting terrain, moving from wide, open horizons to the striking, jagged peaks of the Cederberg before covering the remaining distance to Springbok, a quiet settlement sheltered by granite outcrops in the Namaqua Desert, where we settle in for dinner and an overnight stay at the Springbok Inn Hotel (or similar) with breakfast included.

We make our way across the border and into Namibia today, then journey a brief distance to our base camp situated on the Orange Riverbank from where we start our canoe expedition. After our gear has been packed into our two-man canoes, we head off into the wild. The Orange River forms an incredible sight – a green ribbon snaking its way through the desert and enormous mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We spend one evening camping beneath the skies and then make our way back to base camp to spend the following night in comfort.

Our journey today takes us along a beautiful scenic road into the true Namib, to the Greenfire Desert Camp, our destination for the next two nights. Our camp is located on our private Nature Reserve situated within the Namibrand Nature Reserve and is home to a variety of desert-adapted animals and plant life. The camp is incredibly constructed against a rock outcrop between the giant mountains and red dune-fields

The following morning our guide leads us on a walk to gain an understanding of the desert’s unique geology and ecology. It is important to relax at the camp during the day, to enjoy the plunge pool and a cold drink, but those who are energetic can explore the surrounding rock formations, watch birds, or sit on a rock alone, enraptured by the changing colors of the vast landscape as they watch the sun rise and set. Our afternoon exploration takes us on an open vehicle desert drive to search for gemsbok and bat-eared foxes, followed by a traditional sundowner drink. As the sun sets, we slowly drive back to the camp, hoping to see some of the nocturnal animals that are commonly found in the area, such as porcupines, aardvarks, and brown hyenas.

Today, we journey through Namib-Naukluft National Park, winding through the vivid, multi-hued rock walls of Kuiseb Canyon. After driving through the port of Walvis Bay, we arrive in Swakopmund, our base for the next few nights. Known for its distinct German heritage, this coastal town features pastel-lined streets, inviting cafes, local art, and sunsets best admired from the historic Mole jetty.

Spend your time sampling local cuisine and exploring at your own pace. Thrill-seekers can venture into the dunes for quad biking, sandboarding, or skydiving, while those seeking rest can unwind on the sun-warmed Atlantic beaches.

Our journey heads north to one of the continent’s premier wildlife destinations, Etosha National Park —a sanctuary established over a century ago that ranks among Africa’s largest reserves. Its most iconic feature is the vast Etosha Pan, a striking salt basin so massive it is visible from space, which draws thousands of flamingos during the wet season and provides open plains ideal for spotting elephants, lions, rhinos, and rare black-faced impala around life-sustaining waterholes. We spend two days tracking game across the reserve from our custom safari vehicle, including a patient stakeout at the legendary Okaukuejo waterhole to watch diverse animals gather to drink before heading out for the day, with overnight stays at Taleni Etosha Village Campsite (outside the park) or similar.

Covering significant ground today, we travel through bustling rural settlements and friendly communities en route to the Caprivi Strip. This narrow, 450-kilometer corridor extends east between Angola and Botswana toward the famed “four corners,” where four African nations meet. Defying Namibia’s typical desert landscape, winding rivers like the Kwando and Chobe sustain a flourishing wetland packed with hippos, crocodiles, elephants, lions, and diverse antelope herds. Tonight, we settle in on the lush banks of the Okavango River—a deep, swift waterway framed by towering trees and massive basking crocodiles just upstream from its famous delta.

Crossing into Botswana brings us to one of Earth’s true ecological marvels: the Okavango Delta, the planet’s largest inland wetland system. Originating far to the northwest in the Angolan highlands, the Okavango River flows south-east before fanning out across the Kalahari sands and eventually vanishing into the Makgadikgadi basin, sustaining an extraordinarily rich habitat along the way—from delicate African jacanas stepping over blooming water lilies and swooping bee-eaters to the ringing call of the fish eagle overhead. Based at a comfortable camp set along a sprawling lagoon, we spend our time gliding down reed-fringed waterways in traditional dugout mokoros, wandering untouched islands on foot, enjoying scenic picnic lunches, and learning the secrets of this pristine wilderness directly from indigenous local guides. Back at camp, you can unwind on the open-air wooden deck with a chilled drink, swim in the pool, take a tranquil sunset boat cruise across the waters, or opt for an unforgettable scenic helicopter flight (own expense) to appreciate the vast scale of this water wonderland from above.

An early start sets us on the road toward Maun, the iconic gateway to Botswana’s Okavango Delta. After stopping in town to grab essential supplies and soak in the bustling frontier energy, we make the short drive out to Drifters Maun Lodge, our serene safari base for the night. Nestled along the banks of the storied Boteti River, the lodge offers front-row seats to one of the region’s most intriguing waterways—famous for shifting its course and water levels with seasonal rainfall patterns, often receding to dry sandbanks during the winter months. Unwind under the expansive Kalahari skies and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner at the lodge restaurant to round out the day.

This morning, we enjoy lazing by the swimming pool and enjoying a midday brunch. We suggest joining the local village walk where you learn more about the daily life of the locals. Afterward, we set off east to the enormous Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. The area may look stark, but there is plenty of birdlife and other animals that have made the desert their home. Without leaving a trace we travel to a remote area and enjoy the serenity of the area. We make our way to our accommodation for the evening after exploring this magnificent area.

Venturing north today, our journey brings us to the tranquil banks of the Chobe River, a wildlife haven celebrated for drawing massive animal gatherings and harboring Africa’s highest concentration of wild elephants. Spending time along the water offers unforgettable, tender glimpses into their world—from deeply protective mothers nurturing playful calves to the enduring family bonds uniting the matriarchal herd. This afternoon, take to the water on an extensive Chobe National Park boat safari, cruising quietly alongside the shoreline for rare, eye-level vantage points as elephants, hippos, and abundant plains game arrive at the river’s edge to drink and bathe. Afterward, we cross the Zambian border to meet our local guide and transfer directly to your accommodation where you will cap off an exceptional day with a scenic dinner overlooking the mighty Zambezi River

Important Booking Confirmation

To secure your tour, you must provide your agent with your date of birth, nationality, passport number, special dietary/medical needs, and next of kin emergency contact details. If you are not staying at the official departure hotel the night before your trip, you are required to confirm your tour 24 hours prior to departure and provide a local phone number where you can be reached.

General Touring Style & Guide Protocol

Adventure travel is naturally unpredictable. Itinerary changes may happen on the day due to weather patterns, wildlife migrations, or road conditions—any changes are always made for your benefit and safety. Punctuality in developing countries varies from first-world expectations, so an open mind and flexibility are required. The Operator’s registered, qualified field guides are fully empowered to make all operational decisions on the road.

Active Group Participation

All overland itineraries operate on a participatory principle. This is a shared team adventure, and you are expected or strongly encouraged to help with daily duties. These responsibilities include helping with meal preparation, washing dishes, keeping the safari truck clean, and pitching your own tent on camping trips.

Packing & Luggage Requirements

Luggage is strictly limited to a maximum of 20kg per person. Standard hard-shell suitcases are strongly discouraged because they often do not fit into the truck’s storage lockers. Please bring a backpack, barrel bag, or soft-sided duffel bag instead. Each traveler gets an individual storage locker on the vehicle (60cm H x 38cm W x 88cm L) that can be locked with your own padlock.

For your packing list, bring sturdy sport or hiking shoes, sandals, lightweight long trousers, shorts, T-shirts, a warm jersey/jumper for cold nights, a waterproof windbreaker, a hat, sun cream, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle. If you are booked on a camping or basic pioneer itinerary, you must bring your own sleeping bag and a small pillow.

Passports, Visas & Minor Regulations

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months past your tour return date. If entering or transiting through South Africa, you are legally required to have at least two blank facing pages in your passport. It is your sole responsibility to check and secure all necessary entry visas prior to departure.

If traveling through Botswana with minors (children under 18), you must carry certified copies of their unabridged birth certificates. If only one parent is traveling with the child, a certified parental consent affidavit from the absent parent is strictly required. We recommend making two physical photocopies of your passport, visas, and insurance policy to keep in separate places.

Money, Banking & Cash Regulations

In South Africa and Namibia, credit cards are widely accepted at major supermarkets and large establishments, though rural trading stores only accept cash. For East Africa and Zimbabwe, cash is heavily preferred, and credit cards are rarely favored.

If you are using US Dollars (USD), local banks and immigration officials enforce incredibly strict regulations: all bills must be the large head variety and dated 2009 or newer. Bills that are torn, stamped, marked, crumpled, or heavily soiled will be rejected outright. Bring a mix of small and large pristine bills.

Compulsory Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is a strict, mandatory requirement for all passengers. You will be required to show full policy details to your guide before traveling. Your insurance must cover medical expenses, personal injury, and emergency medical evacuation. The Operator strongly recommends a minimum evacuation benefit of USD 60,000.00 to safely cover transport from remote wilderness zones back to a major facility in South Africa.

Vaccines & Malaria Health Precautions

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if your tour enters East Africa (Kenya/Tanzania/Uganda) or if you are entering South Africa after transiting an endemic country. This must be done at least 10 days before departure. Ensure standard boosters for Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, and Hepatitis are up to date.

Large portions of our tour routes are malaria risk zones, meaning high-quality prescribed malaria prophylaxis is essential. Please consult your local travel clinic or doctor well in advance to find the right medication. To prevent bites, always apply an effective insect repellent after sunset and wear long sleeves and trousers. Please pack a complete supply of your own daily and basic over-the-counter medications, as specific remedies cannot be sourced in remote bush areas.

Food, Drinks & Sundry Expenses

All main daily meals are provided as specified in your tour itinerary. On certain itineraries, the first day does not include meals, allowing the group to meet for an own-expense dinner while conducting the tour briefing. All soft drinks, bottled mineral water, and alcoholic beverages are for your own expense throughout the trip. Your guide will advise you when to buy and stock up on refreshments for a few days at a time.

Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is regarded as an important common courtesy in Southern and East Africa to thank staff for excellent service. As a general safari guideline, we recommend budgeting roughly €10.00 to €18.00 per traveler per day for your main tour guide(s), and €2.00 to €3.00 per day for local site or game guides. For specialized local activities like Okavango Delta polers, a tip of Pula 20.00 per person per day is recommended. For communal lodge or camp staff, a general rate of €5.00 to €10.00 total per person can be placed in the communal tip jar.

Regional Rules & Onboard Power

Please note that plastic carrier bags are strictly illegal in East African countries like Kenya. Do not pack them or use airport plastic luggage wrap, as doing so carries heavy spot fines or legal penalties. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of local people or their homes. For charging your electronics, our safari trucks are equipped with charging stations and inverters that function while the vehicle is driving, allowing you to charge your devices on the road.

Expect robust custom-built overland trucks for long-haul travel, often with pop-up roofs and large windows for comfort and views. On game drives in tight terrain (e.g., Mana Pools), smaller 4×4 Land Cruisers or Land Rovers are used for better maneuverability

Yes, most trucks have charging points, and campsites usually offer power stations. Bringing a power bank is still a good idea for remote areas.

Many nationalities including South African passport holders do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days. However, because overlanding involves multi-region travel, and if you are planning to visit neighbouring countries such as Namibia or Zimbabwe, you may require a double-entry visa. Essentially, it is always best to check the latest visa requirements with the Botswana Embassy or consulate in your country.

It is a 20-day tour (19 nights). It can be done in either a North (Cape Town to Victoria Falls) or South direction (Victoria Falls to Cape Town). The expedition covers South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe The tour is offered in two main versions: a camping option or an accommodated version.

Malaria is low risk in most parts of Namibia, especially in the south and desert areas. In Etosha and the north, it’s recommended to take precautions, especially in summer.

Most of East Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda, is situated in a malaria-endemic zone. While the risk is real, it should not deter you from traveling; it simply requires proactive preparation. Where is the risk highest? Malaria is generally more prevalent in low-lying, humid areas and coastal regions (like Zanzibar and Mombasa) compared to high-altitude areas (like the Ngorongoro Crater rim or the Rwanda highlands). The risk also increases during the "long rains" (March–May). How to Prepare:

  • Prophylaxis: Visit a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before your trip. Medications like Malarone, Doxycycline, or Lariam are commonly prescribed for East Africa.
  • Bite Prevention: This is your first line of defense. Use a repellent with 30–50% DEET and wear long-sleeved clothing from dusk until dawn.
  • Accommodations: Most lodges and tented camps provide mosquito nets or "insect-proof" tents. If your room has a net, use it—even if you don't hear any buzzing!
  • Yellow Fever Note: If you are traveling between East African countries (e.g., from Kenya to Tanzania), you will often be required to show a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate at the border.
  • Expert Tip: Malaria symptoms can sometimes mimic a common flu and may only appear weeks after you return home. If you feel unwell after your trip, tell your doctor exactly where you traveled in East Africa.
