The Budget Camping Route
Camping is the best option if you want to feel the pulse of the African bush. Most campsites feature excellent, clean bathroom facilities, with two-person dome tents and a shared bar/pool areas. It is highly cost-effective, offers total immersion in nature, and provides the ultimate classic safari atmosphere. But, it does mean sharing communal bathroom facilities with your fellow adventurers, and helping pitch your own tent.

The Accommodated Route
If the idea of sleeping on the ground is not your idea of fun, do not worry. Accommodated tours follow the exact same routes and use the same overland trucks. At the end of the day, you check into a beautiful chalet or hotel room, or safari tents. There is no physical set up each night, and you sleep in a bed with the luxury of private bathrooms. But the price tag is higher.

How Long Do You Have to Travel?
How many days you have to travel plays a big role in where to go. Africa is massive, and overland travel takes time due to the rugged terrain and vast distances. Fortunately, there is a route tailored for every schedule.
If You Only Have a Few Days to Travel (1 to 7 Days)
You do not need months of leave to experience the magic of an overland safari. Short, high-intensity itineraries focus heavily on regional highlights, maximizing your wildlife viewing hours while minimizing transit days.
If you are short on time, look for focused ecosystem tours. I would recommend opting for a week-long immersion into two of Southern Africa’s premier wildlife havens: the elephant-rich Chobe National Park and the pristine, labyrinthine waterways of the Okavango Delta. In just one week, you’ll paddle through wilderness channels on a traditional dug-out canoe (mokoro) and track lions, hippos, and massive elephant herds.

What Should I Pack for a Mobile Safari?

A high-quality headlamp or torch (critical for navigating campsites at night).
A power bank to keep your devices charged during bush camping days.
A warm jacket and beanie (early morning game drives in open vehicles can be freezing, even in summer).
Quick-drying clothing in neutral earth tones (avoid bright colors or pure white on safari).
