This is the single biggest structural difference between the two itineraries, and it shapes everything else about the trip.
Nomad drives the whole route. From Cape Town, the truck heads inland through the Cederberg (rooibos tea country), down to the Orange River, then to Fish River Canyon, Africa’s largest canyon, before reaching the Quiver Tree Forest and Giant’s Playground and finally the Namib Desert. This is roughly five extra travel days through landscapes Jenman’s itinerary doesn’t touch at all, because Jenman’s guests fly straight from Cape Town to Windhoek.
Jenman flies you over that leg. After three nights in Cape Town, two of them free and unguided, with your tour guide only joining from Day 4, you fly to Windhoek (flight cost not included in the tour price) and start the guided portion of the trip from there. You gain extra downtime in Cape Town and skip several long driving days, but you also skip the Fish River Canyon, Quiver Tree Forest, and Orange River entirely.
Neither approach is objectively better. If the overland drive through Namibia’s remote south is part of the appeal for you, Nomad’s route delivers it. If you’d rather spend that time exploring Cape Town at your own pace and get straight to the marquee destinations, Jenman’s flight option saves you the road time.
The Okavango Delta: Closer than the Old Story Suggests
A common assumption is that Nomad’s Okavango experience includes a scenic flight into the Delta as standard. On the current itinerary, that’s no longer the case, the scenic flight is a pre-bookable optional activity, exactly as it is on Jenman’s tour. Both operators transfer you into the Delta region by vehicle: Nomad uses smaller safari vehicles to reach Khwai Tented Camp, while Jenman uses a 4×4 transfer to Camelthorn Bush Camp in the Greater Moremi region.
Both itineraries include a mokoro (dugout canoe) excursion and a full day of 4×4 game drives in Moremi Game Reserve. Jenman’s itinerary includes a night game drive at the bush camp; Nomad’s Khwai stay leans on the daytime Moremi game drive plus the sunset mokoro outing. If a scenic flight over the Delta matters to you, budget for it as an add-on regardless of which operator you choose.
Vehicle and Day-to-Day Comfort
Nomad’s Premier vehicle is purpose-built for long overland days: air-conditioning, reclining leather seats that rotate 180 degrees, and an onboard toilet for emergencies. It’s designed around the reality that you’ll spend meaningful stretches of most days on the road, Nomad’s own trip notes mention travel days of 350–650km, which is typical for this route regardless of operator.
Jenman’s itinerary is structured more like point-to-point touring with a guided vehicle for transfers and game drives, and lodge or hotel stays as the anchor of each stop. With three fewer overland days than Nomad (thanks to the Windhoek flight) and more nights built around a single property, there’s comparatively more unstructured downtime at each stop.
Dining Style
This is one of the more tangible differences a traveller will feel day to day. Nomad’s 20-day itinerary includes 17 of 20 dinners, most prepared at the truck or over a campfire, a hands-on, communal style that’s part of the overland culture Nomad is built around. Jenman’s 24-day itinerary includes 15 of 24 dinners, with the balance made up of restaurant and lodge dining at your own expense, meaning more meals are eaten out, but fewer are pre-included in the tour price.
If a big part of the appeal of overlanding is sitting around a fire cooking with your group, Nomad’s structure supports that. If you’d rather have more restaurant meals and flexibility on where you eat, Jenman’s structure leaves more of that choice (and cost) in your hands.
