There are a handful of experiences that you just have to do at least once in your life. From the moment you step off the platform, suspended hundreds of feet in the air, and surrender to gravity, you are living in a moment that will become your most favorite memory. Bungee jumping is the ultimate adrenaline rush. It is a heart pounding mix of triumph and terror. What better backdrop for this adrenaline adventure than the stunning, diverse landscapes of Africa? From the urban heart of Soweto to the mist of the mighty Victoria Falls, Africa offers some of the world’s most unique and spectacular bungee jumps. Leap from the highest bridge on the continent or dive towards crocodile-infested rivers. Our guide will help you pinpoint the perfect jump for your desired thrill, from a gasping, adrenaline-fueled plunge into a canyon to choosing the best place to bungee jump while on safari.
Bungee jumping is an activity that requires participants to leap from tall structures whilst attached to a bungee cord, also known as a shock cord. It is made of braided elastic strands that form a core and wrapped in polypropylene sheath. The word ‘bungee’ as used by A.J Hackett is Kiwi slang for an elastic strap. The high structure that people jump from is typically a fixed object such as a building, bridge or crane, but it is also possible to dive from a moveable object, like a hot air balloon or even a helicopter which can hover over the ground below. The adrenaline rush that people get when bungee jumping comes from the feeling of free-falling from quite a considerable height, as well as from the rebound – in which participants bounce back up with the help of the elastic cord. When someone makes the initial jump, the cord stretches and the jumper is flung upwards once more when the cord recoils, and continues to bounce up and down for a while, until all kinetic energy has been exhausted.
There are only a few countries that offer a world-class, permanent site for a heart-pounding jump. Here are the must-visit locations you can see and book at while on safari:
Located in Tsitsikamma, Garden Route, the world’s highest commercial bridge bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge does not disappoint. Imagine standing on a platform that is 216 meters (709 feet) high, ready to plunge into the luscious greenery and the Bloukrans River below. Start your experience by fitting into a full-body harness to ensure your safety. Then hold on tight as you propel toward the arch of the bridge, which is suspended high above the Bloukrans River. Feel the wind rush through your hair and excitement surge through your veins as you speed toward the jump point. And if you choose not to jump, the zipline and cheering on others taking the daring plunge is also a great thrill. The view is magnificent and the staff are professional experts. If the bungee jump is not for you, how does an awe-inspiring SkyWalk Tour sound? It is an adventure that seamlessly combines breathtaking views with a dash of adrenaline. First you harness up into a full-body harness to ensure your safety throughout your experience. Then embark on a guided tour of the history and engineering of the Broukrans Bridge. The Victoria Falls Bungee Jump is without a doubt the most scenic bungee jump in the world! With the falls behind you as a backdrop, and the mighty Zambezi River flowing beneath you, this is sure to be the greatest jump you will ever experience. They operate on weekends and public holidays only. Besides bungee jumping, fly across the King’s Kloof on a 320m steel cable, wearing a harness with two safety slings, which is connected to a cable above your head. This is called the foofie slide, and is just as exciting! If you’d prefer to swing across the gorge, then the bridge swing is for you. You can walk across the Burma Bridge; a hanging bridge, consisting of a 4- cable system, 120m across the King’s Kloof Valley and approximately 60m high above the ground. Walk on the bottom cable, using the two cables on either side as hand rails. You are also harnessed to the top cable above your head. DVD’s are available to purchase at the end of your experience.

If you’re not feeling like jumping, a cliff walk above the lush forest below, along a narrow walkway is a great experience! As you walk the winding paths, secured by a harness, you take in the beauty that surrounds you. The pathway leads to the suspension bridge – but the adventure does not end there. Gear up for a zipline, adding a whole new level of exploration. Take a few moments to catch your breath, then continue your adventure on the walkway toward the viewing lift, where you can descend to the forest floor level. Stroll on the 600 meter elevated boardwalk where the suspension bridges cross the Motitsi River, with spectacular views of the waterfall.
