Solo, Not Alone: The Ultimate Guide for the Modern Female Explorer

Did you know that 60% of solo travellers worldwide are women?

Women are journeying solo in a powerful movement to reclaim their independence, confidence, and passion. Navigating a foreign city or a hiking trail alone acts as a crucible for self-reliance. The solo travel economy is rising, and at African Overland Tours we support and encourage women who want to explore the world on their own terms!

If you are considering your first solo adventure, remember: you may be travelling on your own, but you are never truly alone. When you journey with African Overland tours in a guided tour or group expedition, you have a built-in community of expert advice, fellow travellers, and dedicated crew members who are ready to support you every step of the way.

We have created a solo travel guide to help you stay savvy, healthy, and confident on the road.

The Art of Blending In

Your travelling outfit should make you feel confident, and also respect the local culture. We encourage dressing the part by opting for styles that allow for easy movement without drawing unnecessary attention. Of course, when it’s time for the beach, wear the swimwear that makes you feel great! If you ever encounter unwanted attention from bored bystanders, remember that saying NO is powerful, and NO is a complete sentence. Use it firmly and unapologetically, and move on with confidence.

Move with Purpose

Confidence is your best security detail! Even when you are figuring things out, walk like you have a destination in mind.

Plan your route by studying your map before you leave your accommodation. Always use recognized and reputable transport services – book these in advance through your guide or hotel. While the night is beautiful and peaceful, save the solo wandering for the daylight. At night, stay close to your group and guide. They will know the local “no-go” zones and ensure you are always kept safe.

Savvy Traveller Hacks

Sometimes, to safeguard yourself from persistent characters who won’t take the hint, a little white lie goes a long way. Mentioning a partner or husband nearby (or even wearing a simple band on your ring finger) can be a quick way to subdue an uncomfortable conversation. Ensure your door is always locked at night. If you are on a budget and make a fast friend, consider sharing a tent or room with a fellow female traveller.

Pack for Your Wellness

When travelling in different parts of the world – especially when exploring parts of Africa or rural areas – it might be difficult to find your favorite brands/products.

Pack a supply of your preferred feminine hygiene products that you know are safe and tested. If you are on the contraceptive pill, ensure you have more than enough for the duration of your trip. Travel can be tough on the body. We highly recommend packing a 9-Strain Probiotic and Cranberry Complex to keep your gut health and hydration on track while you are journeying.

Nurture the Experience

At African Overland Tours, we believe that travel is about nurturing your inner self, not only about checking off landmarks. Travel is one of the best ways to make new friends, share stories over dinner, and experience the joys of adventure! Just be mindful of any alcohol intake so that you stay alert and hydrated.

When heading to Africa, do your research beforehand. Read our blogs, watch our documentary videos on YouTube, and/or listen to our podcasts by women who have firsthand experience on what you can expect.

Are you ready to take a leap of faith and embark on your solo adventure? The world (and our tours) are waiting for you!
