Lusaka, Zambia

Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka, is the largest town and one of Southern-Africa’s fastest growing cities. The once village was named after a headman ‘Lusaaka’ which was later expanded by British settlers in 1905 when they built a railway.

Due to its central location and railway accessing the great north and great east roads, it was chosen to replace Livingstone as the capital city, in 1935. The great north road was envisioned by Cecil John Rhodes wanting to create the Pan-African highway stretching from Cape Town to Cairo. The great east road linked Lusaka with eastern-Zambia and Mozambique.

The local markets are a hive of activity with both locals and tourists browsing thousands of stalls for locally made hand-crafted wooden curios, veggies, fruit, fabric and don’t be surprised to stop off for a haircut at one of the hairdressers in the market!
