Ngorongoro Crater is an expensive safari destination, but there are two key ways to keep costs down
Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most famous safari destinations and on the bucket list of people around the world. Between June 2022 and June 2023 it saw over 750,000 visitors a year, according to a report in The Citizen. It’s one of Tanzania’s most-visited sites along with the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar. Its wildlife is diverse and includes many endangered species, like black rhinos, which are patrolled around the clock.
It perhaps won’t surprise you, knowing this, to learn that Ngorongoro Crater is an expensive safari destination. But as with most trips, there are ways to keep certain costs down if you know what you’re doing.
With this in mind, let’s first discuss the entrance tariffs. I’ll then explain the three key ways to do an Ngorongoro Crater safari on a budget.
There are various valid reasons why the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) charges sizeable daily permit fees for Ngorongoro Crater and the broader Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). I won’t detail them all here, but I did already mention the fact that its rhino population receives constant monitoring, which is just one piece of the expenses pie.
The main point I wish to make is that there’s no getting around the daily permit tariffs if you want to enter the NCA and descend into the crater. Yes, you can view Ngorongoro Crater from the rim without paying the fee associated with driving down into it (no tourists are permitted to explore it on foot). But while the view from the rim is indeed a spectacular sight, the real magic is experiencing the crater from within, where the scale of its walls is even more impressive and you discover how chockfull of wildlife it is.

Below are the four entrance tariffs you must pay as of January 2026, according to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, if you wish to enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and drive down into the crater. I’m giving all fees in US dollars and as they pertain to non-East African citizens. Note too that these are daily permits that operate on a 24-hour cycle from whenever you enter the NCA, and not per calendar date.
An NCA entry permit costs $70.80 for anyone 16 years and older. It costs $23.60 for those between five and 16. Children under five years can enter for free.
This is the tariff you pay to bring a vehicle into the NCA. As always, it’s a daily fee. The tariff is determined by car size and whether or not it’s locally registered. A locally registered vehicle under 2,000 kg costs 23,600 Tanzanian shillings (TSh), or a little over $9, per day. This goes up to 41,300 TSh (about $16) for a vehicle under 3,000 kg.
Bear in mind that if you decide to go the self-drive route, you really do want to fill your vehicle to capacity with people paying their own way in order to help share the cost of the vehicle tariff.
This permit costs $295 per vehicle per entry into the crater. So this particular permit fee can actually be reduced as it relates to your own pocket if you join a group safari tour, as the price will then be split with your fellow safarigoers.
FYI, this tariff is called the “Crater Service Fee” by TANAPA.
The NCA’s accommodation fee is in addition to whatever you pay for your actual accommodation. It costs $59 per adult per night if staying at a lodge or permanent tented camp. For a public campsite (the cheapest kind), it costs $34.50 per adult per night.
If you’re starting to develop a tiny headache from looking at the above tariff figures, remember that you won’t have to think through or deal with any of this if you travel with a tour operator!
What’s more, tour operators know how long everything takes, from driving distances to how much time feels like enough inside the crater. This matters because you must pay for your 24-hour permits in advance. Personally, it would make me a little anxious as a tourist to have to determine in advance how long I need for everything.
Here now are three ways to help reduce the cost of a safari to Ngorongoro Crater …

Given the international crowd that visits Ngorongoro Crater, the limited real estate near the crater rim, and the steep entrance tariffs, the majority of the lodges and campsites near to Ngorongoro Crater cater for the luxury and mid-range traveller. The budget campsites within the NCA are also more expensive than the budget campsites of Tanzania’s less sought-after destinations.
In terms of accommodation within the NCA, your cheapest option is good old-fashioned camping. But if money really is an issue, you can save a great deal by staying outside of the NCA. These external accommodations are not only priced much better than their NCA equivalents, but you don’t have to pay the camping or concession fee charged to everyone who sleeps inside the NCA. The drive time from these outside accommodations to the crater itself often isn’t long at all; you can journey from some to the crater rim within about an hour.
Finally, I want to remind you that a universal way of keeping down accommodation costs is having someone to bunk with, so to speak. You’ll be charged extra if you want a room or tent to yourself.

One of the most affordable ways to do an Ngorongoro Crater safari is to book with a budget tour operator like African Overland Tours. We all know that group travel offers various attractive savings. Moreover, when an established tour operator is booking things for you, they’re often able to access operator-only discounts or acquire special rates based on their relationship with a particular accommodation.
The other most affordable option is a self-drive safari. Self-drive safaris keep costs down by removing the tour operator fee.
If you intend to do a self-drive safari, please know that you cannot make payment in cash at the NCA entrance. TANAPA has chosen not to allow cash payments at its park entrances. So you must purchase your permits at a bank beforehand or pay with a credit card at the park entrance.
One of the great benefits of doing any Tanzanian safari with a tour operator is that they purchase all park permits for you in advance. Furthermore, your guide goes into the office at each park entrance and does the necessary paperwork for you. This makes all park entries swift and seamless. Just saying.

As I’ve been stressing, all tariffs relating to Ngorongoro Crater and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area operate on a 24-hour basis. So time is money. If you only have enough in your budget to enter the NCA for one 24-hour cycle – do still go for it! The experience will be utterly memorable even if brief. A single day is enough time to enjoy the view from the crater rim as well as have one safari drive in the crater.
Obviously, a little more time is preferable. Not only can you enter the crater more than once, and you hedge your bets against bad weather, but it lets you plan another activity. For instance, you can enjoy a guided nature walk along the crater rim.
Another great activity is exploring one of the other depressions in the NCA, like Empakaai Crater. At Empakaai, you can actually do guided hikes down into the crater. There is lots of wildlife to appreciate, and the pink flamingoes on the lake dominating the basin floor are a striking sight.

This blog post has focused on the different ways to keep down costs on an Ngorongoro Crater safari. But I have made the odd comment about the admin involved with a self-drive safari, as it can be a bit of a headache if you’re unfamiliar with how things work in Tanzania.
I believe the best way to enjoy an Ngorongoro Crater trip whilst also watching your spend is by booking yourself onto a small-group budget tour.
Small-group tours let you relax, because you have others planning and booking everything for you, keeping you safe throughout the trip, preparing your meals, and ensuring you understand and appreciate all that yo
u see. If you’re going to invest in an Ngorongoro Crater safari, don’t cut costs without consideration for your safety, ease, and comfort. Find the right balance. And you could well find just that in one of these budget Ngorongoro Crater itineraries by African Overland Tours.
