Big 5 Conservation: Make a Real Impact in the Greater Kruger. No prior experience needed! Join our impactful Big 5 Conservation Project and immerse yourself in the captivating wilderness of South Africa’s renowned Greater Kruger area. This enriching experience is perfect for any animal lover or wildlife enthusiast, offering a unique opportunity to work alongside our skilled team. You’ll actively contribute to meaningful wildlife conservation initiatives, tracking, monitoring, and collecting vital data on Africa’s iconic Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) and other magnificent animals during daily game drives. Gain a deeper understanding of ecosystem management, habitat restoration, and the urgent threat of poaching, as you learn, grow, and truly fall in love with the African bush.
Imagine waking up in the heart of the Greater Kruger area, a breathtaking tapestry of over 20 private reserves seamlessly woven together with the iconic Kruger National Park. This isn’t just a place to visit; it’s a vibrant, living sanctuary. Here, within almost 5.5 million acres of unfenced wilderness, wildlife roams freely across the wild savannah. This vast landscape pulsates with life, offering a safe haven for an extraordinary array of threatened species – from the majestic lion and powerful elephant to the graceful giraffe and the critically endangered African wild dog. Get ready for endless opportunities for truly unique wildlife encounters. Picture elephants joining you for dinner, or the unforgettable serenade of hippos at night. It’s an immersive experience where nature takes center stage.
Your journey takes you deep into the heart of the Mtimkulu Private Reserve, where our base camp offers a truly immersive research experience designed to connect you with the African wilderness. Situated directly on the banks of the majestic Olifants River, the camp serves as a front-row seat to nature’s theater; it is not uncommon to watch elephants, hippos, and crocodiles navigating the water just moments from your doorstep. The accommodation itself is a blend of adventure and comfort, featuring a mix of spacious tented rooms and dormitories that offer sweeping, uninterrupted views of the reserve, allowing you to wake up to the sights and sounds of the bush every morning.
Life at base is designed to foster community and creativity. While the camp maintains an authentic rustic feel with shared bathroom facilities, modern necessities like WiFi are available throughout the lodge, ensuring you can stay connected while living off the grid. Your project fee covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, seven days a week, ensuring you are well-fueled for your photography assignments. Evenings are spent in the lively common dining area or gathered around the welcoming outdoor fire pit, where you will enjoy traditional South African braais (BBQs) under the stars, sharing stories with fellow volunteers as the sounds of the Greater Kruger echo around you.
Your journey begins and ends seamlessly with airport transfers from Hoedspruit Airport (HDS), just a 75-minute drive from Kambaku II Camp. Arrive and depart anytime on your designated Sundays, and you’ll be greeted by a friendly welcome. Stay connected with WiFi available throughout the lodge. For those seeking local cellular connectivity, MTN is recommended for purchasing a South African SIM card.
You’ll be guided and supported by an exceptional team, including our dynamic Photography Coordinator, Anique van der Kuil. Anique, a Bachelor’s Degree holder in Creative Business, brings a unique blend of creative thinking and image capture expertise. Her journey started as a volunteer in this very Greater Kruger Base, igniting her passion for conservation and visual storytelling. Her captivating content has even been featured by BBC Earth and Canon South Africa, offering unparalleled mentorship in visual storytelling and ethical photography.
Your safety is paramount. Our qualified field guides are extensively trained in wildlife encounters and hold valid driver’s licenses. All vehicles are well-maintained and fitted with radios for constant contact with base camp. Our project is committed to safeguarding volunteers, staff, and the environment, with a team trained in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) competencies. The base is equipped with fire safety equipment, evacuation plans, and has access to an ambulance service. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is provided for physical conservation work, and a comprehensive induction upon arrival ensures you are fully aware of all policies and procedures for a secure and impactful experience.

Eswatini offers a peaceful, compact break from bigger Southern African countries—without compromising on culture, wildlife, or scenery. It’s a refreshing change of pace with short drive times, low traffic, and a welcoming vibe, making it a perfect stopover or two-night detour on routes between Kruger and Mozambique or KwaZulu-Natal.
