24 Day Epic Overland Expedition: East Africa & Zanzibar

Spend the evening at the hotel bar with your new friends before tomorrow’s early morning. Spend a chill night getting to know your group and guide while filling those food and drink needs.

We will drive across the Rift Valley to the most famous national park in Africa, Maasai Mara National Game Reserve. We enjoy the afternoon on a game drive in search of the Big Five. We arrive at camp for the evening in the afternoon.  Once settled in, we embark on another game drive in the park.

With an early start to the morning we embark on another game drive in the park. Enjoy the variety of game viewing today as we cross the plains and rivers of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

We leave behind the Masai Mara making a stop at Ubuntu Cafe for lunch. After lunch we head to Lake Nakuru National Park. Our afternoon is spent game driving through the national park in search of the many animals such as the black rhino, buffalo, impala and the elusive leopard.

Head out on a morning safari around Lake Nakuru National Park, known for its rich birdlife and diverse wildlife. Afterwards, continue your journey by road to Eldoret.

Get your passport ready for more countries to add as you enter Uganda. We will camp outside of the country’s capital today. Enjoy a welcome meeting to connect with your new travel companions.

Cross the equator today as you travel from Kampala to Lake Bunyonyi. Known as the “place of many little birds,” this scenic lake is dotted with 29 islands and surrounded by steep, terraced hills. On arrival, enjoy free time to explore or take a refreshing swim in its calm waters.

Set out on a once-in-a-lifetime trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, hiking deep into dense volcanic forest alongside an expert ranger in search of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The trek can be challenging, with varying distances and terrain, but the reward is an unforgettable wildlife encounter. To protect these endangered animals, visits are strictly limited to eight people per gorilla family each day. The group will be divided into smaller trekking groups, and depending on numbers, some may trek on different days.

Enjoy a full free day at Lake Bunyonyi, with plenty of ways to experience its peaceful beauty. Choose from activities like swimming, hiking, canoeing, birdwatching, or a scenic motorboat tour around the lake’s many islands. In the evening, unwind with the group back at the lodge.

An early morning rise will enable us to go on a chimpanzee tracking excursion after which we will visit a tea plantation where a local guide will inform you about the varieties of tea and the farming process before making our way to Lake Mburo. Enjoy an optional boat cruise on the lake in the afternoon.

Today you’ll cross back over the equator into Uganda, one of the few places where this iconic line can be crossed by land. Along the way, stop for lunch at the AidChild Equation Café and Gallery. Continue on to Jinja, arriving in the evening.

Spend time exploring Jinja and taking part in activities such as Quad Biking along the banks of the Nile or sip on some G&T’s while lying on a hammock floating down the Nile. Watch a spectacular sunset while cruising on a boat. Jinja has something for everyone.

Having experienced an adventurous day yesterday, you will appreciate a more relaxed travel day today. Take advantage of the ride to Nairobi as the group transfers through the Kenyan countryside. To get you through the day, we are planning on naps, story time, and perhaps a mini dance party in the overland vehicle.

We will continue to experience the Serengeti on more game drives in the morning. When we return to the campsite we will pack up and journey to the Ngorongoro Crater for spectacular views of the rim populated with a variety of wildlife where we will camp for the night.

Some of you may have pre-booked a Serengeti Balloon Safari in which case this activity will likely take place today. In this case you will miss the morning game drive.

The time has come for you to experience “Africa’s Garden of Eden” up close. A final safari experience awaits the group today on the crater floor. If you want to see wildlife, make sure your camera is charged! Because of the crater walls and the enclosed nature of the crater, its own ecosystem has been created, including grasslands, swamps, acacia forests, and Lake Makat. With full camera rolls the group will exit the crater in the late morning and travel back to Arusha. While cruising along, swap stories, pull out your favorite photos from earlier, or simply sit back and take it all in.

Depart Arusha early this morning in your private vehicle and travel toward Dar es Salaam. Take in the changing Tanzanian landscapes along the way, with glimpses of the Indian Ocean as you near the coast. You’ll spend the night in this bustling port city before continuing on to the beaches of Zanzibar.

If you have booked the Zanzibar Express, you will transfer to the airport this morning for your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival in Stone Town enjoy a free day of shopping, relaxing or wandering through the markets. Meet with the group again tomorrow.

Catch the morning ferry to Zanzibar’s stunning island beaches and spend the day soaking up the sun on its sandy shores. Later, join your guide for an orientation walk through historic Stone Town.

Spend the day discovering the heart of Zanzibar at your own pace. Wander through winding streets, explore bustling squares, and sample local treats from street vendors. Later, the group will continue to the tropical paradise of Jambiani for the next few days.

Enjoy a relaxing morning on this island paradise. Africa meets Arabia and the Indian Ocean is the cherry on top of this great cultural crossroads. Whether you want to go diving, snorkeling, sailing, or just lazing on the beach, the day is yours. Located in the East African Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is known for its tropical setting, unique culture, and active beach-party scene.
