11 Day Cape Town to Victoria Falls Family Adventure

The Cape Peninsula is a rocky headland jutting into the Atlantic Ocean. This morning, you will embark on a daylong tour of the Peninsula. You can observe thousands of African penguins waddling about on Boulders Beach. A visit to the Cape of Good Hope-where many unfortunate ships met their watery demise during the Age of Exploration-and a climb to Cape Point to enjoy the spectacular views will round out the experience. Taking Chapman’s Peak Drive along the Atlantic Coast will bring you back to Cape Town.

Spend this day at leisure, discovering Cape Town’s charms on a variety of optional excursions. Ride the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway to the summit for incredible views of the Atlantic coast. Visit the Iziko Slave Lodge – a museum dedicated to the history of slavery in South Africa. A visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium is a great way to see a diverse collection of marine life, including adorable clownfish and translucent jellyfish

From Cape Town, we fly to the Greater Kruger National Park and check into your lodge.

An open jeep safari in Kruger National Park features a mind-boggling array of large mammals. Experience the trumping elephants, swaggering lions, majestic giraffes, and hopefully the elusive leopards as you ride through the wilderness. Following the tracks of the wilderness creatures, we will travel across savanna scrubland, and riverbanks on this day long excursion. South Africa’s Kruger National Park is one of the largest and most impressive animal reserves in the world at over 19,000 sq km (7,500 sq mi). The Kruger has the greatest number of large mammals than any other park on the continent.

Get out early in the morning for another safari drive, looking for the creatures you missed the day before. During the afternoon, you can explore the Kruger region at your leisure. Try ziplining in the area or relax by the pool at our lodge.

We invite you to visit Chimp Eden after breakfast to meet our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. A chimpanzee sanctuary run by the Jane Goodall Institute of South Africa, Chimp Eden houses more than 30 rescued chimpanzees. We will be able to see rescued chimpanzees living in a safe and secure sanctuary at Chimp Eden, the home of legendary ethologist and National Geographic grantee Dr. Jane Goodall and learn why she first became fascinated by chimpanzees in 1960 when she began her research. We will drive to Johannesburg arriving there in the evening.

A visit to the Cradle of Humankind is a journey back millions of years in time to find fossils of some of our earliest known ancestors. Lee Berger, National Geographic Explorer-at-Large, excavated Homo Naledi, a newly defined species of hominin. In the otherworldly Sterkfontein Caves, you will find the remains of “Mrs. Ples” and “Little Foot”— both more than two million years old; then visit the Maropeng Visitors Centre to marvel at the actual skeletal remains and learn more about the evolution of our species. You are invited to enjoy a traditional South African braai (barbeque) this evening.

We will fly across borders and into Zimbabwe. We set out with a local guide to tour Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls on Earth. It was David Livingstone who named them after Queen Victoria, but their indigenous name is Mosi-oa-Tunya “the smoke that thunders.” The waterfall’s powerful roar can be heard 24 miles away, and you’ll be soaked by its powerful spray if you stand at one of its overlooks during the high-water season.

The daytime is yours to explore Victoria Falls and its surroundings. Take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River or go canoeing. You can also visit Chobe National Park in Botswana to seek out its resident elephants. Join fellow travellers for a farewell dinner featuring local music and dance this evening away.
