Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is Africa’s untamed gem—home to roaring Victoria Falls, vast savannahs teeming with wildlife, and ancient ruins whispering forgotten histories. From adrenaline-packed adventures to soul-stirring landscapes, this is a land of raw beauty and warm hospitality, waiting to be explored on an unforgettable overland journey.

Zimbabwe Tours

Zimbabwe is wild, free, and fiercely beautiful—a country where adventure pulses through the land like a heartbeat. Picture this: standing in a misty rainbow at the edge of Victoria Falls, the thunder of “The Smoke That Thunders” vibrating in your chest. Or tracking lions and elephants in Hwange, where the wilderness feels untouched and infinite.

Overlanding here means freedom—camping under star-blanketed skies, swapping stories around crackling fires, and waking up to the roar of the wild. It’s about bumping along dusty roads to Mana Pools, where you can walk (yes, walk!) alongside elephants in one of Africa’s last true wildernesses.

But Zimbabwe isn’t just about raw nature. It’s history carved in stone—the mysterious ruins of Great Zimbabwe, a lost kingdom’s legacy. It’s the warmth of its people, whose resilience and joy will leave a mark on your soul.

This is Africa at its most authentic. No crowds, no pretenses—just pure, unfiltered adventure.

When to visit zimbabwe

For the ultimate wildlife safari and the best views of Victoria Falls, plan your trip during Zimbabwe’s dry season from May to October. For a different experience featuring lush landscapes, baby animals, and incredible birdwatching, consider the “Green Season” shoulder months of March, April, and November. The peak rainy season (December-February) can be challenging due to heavy rain but offers dramatic scenery for the adventurous traveler.

Zimbabwe offers several less-traveled but equally rewarding destinations such as Chizarira National Park, Bvumba (Vumba) Mountains, Mount Selinda / Chirinda Forest, Nyanga National Park and the Chinhoyi Caves.

Expect robust custom-built overland trucks for long-haul travel, often with pop-up roofs and large windows for comfort and views. On game drives in tight terrain (e.g., Mana Pools), smaller 4×4 Land Cruisers or Land Rovers are used for better maneuverability

Yes. Overland operators often adjust itineraries for safety, weather, or unforeseen local events. Routes may change abruptly—operators stay connected with campsite managers and local contacts to respond quickly

On camping tours—pitching tents, washing dishes, and tent-take-down are shared tasks. Guides and assistants manage most logistics, but participation fosters camaraderie.

Yes to both! Independent adventurers can enjoy trekking, wildlife, and scenic variety and mature travellers can experience historic Rovos Rail journeys through Hwange and to Victoria Falls.

Zimbabwe is generally safe for guided groups, but certain areas (e.g., Chizarira) are very remote with limited cellular coverage and basic medical access. Insurance that includes emergency evacuation is vital.

Expect limited electricity and intermittent mobile data in rural national parks. Bring power banks, solar chargers, and extra SIMs/eSIMs. Campsites occasionally offer basic electricity, but overlanders rely on self-sufficient charging setups.

Hi Tam,
Thanks so much for your email. You beat me to it, I’ve been meaning to reach out and say a big thank you for helping me organise one of the best and memorable trips I’ve taken.
It’s honestly very hard to pick just one stand out moment. I met some amazing people which made my trip very special, I’ve made good friends so under the circumstances I was travelling it made life easier. I loved the diversity of the countries we explored too, for a 20 day tour it offered so much from desert, glamping in the jungle, being in the water with hippos, seeing so many lions, elephants and giraffes and Victoria Falls was an amazing place to finish. We saw a pair of lions mating, watched another pair sleeping and on the last day came upon a kill where the lionesses had killed a buffalo and then let their cubs learn to kill the baby buffalo. That went on for quite a while! But it was something I’ll never forget.
Also the day we spent in Cape Town was also very fun. I loved seeing the penguins and the coast and our drive. I keep telling everyone about Cape Town’s amazing food scene too!
I’ve got quite a few photos too. Does African Overland Tours need any photos? I’d be happy to share some of the accommodation or any of our activities if that helps? I’m trying to get into my photography so happy to share.
Hope you’re having a great start to the week

I don’t know how much magic moments I will keep in mind.. This tour was amazing !!!
I loved so many places that I could not choose ! Every highlight was really wonderful but if I had to choose I would like to put the Okavango delta at the top! The tour with Pride of Africa was amazing.. in the middle of nowhere a magic place and an amazing game drive where we saw the leopard. However the Namib desert was so incredible that it took my breath away several times.
We saw more than 108 elephants in Etosha, all together in a waterhole…just amazing !!’
And Victoria Falls… you can’t imagine how spectacular it is whiteout seeing it by your own eyes !!
Moreover our team was really great and we feel making this journey with our family !
Never forget it and be sure I will keep all this magic moments in my heart!
You could see how happy my son and I were on pictures
Sincerely
Florence and Nils
