Camping vs Accommodated vs Small Groups Safari Tours

What is a Camping Safari?

A camping safari is for travelers who want a hands-on experience of Mother Nature. Setting up your campsite and helping build a campfire whilst surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and scenery. If you dream of a lifetime African adventure, embark on a journey with us sleeping under the stars while listening to the sounds of wildlife in the distance.

What safari options do African Overland Tours have to offer?

We break down the three different options:

1. The Camping Safari option

Immerse yourself in nature, encountering diverse wildlife and connecting with like minded adventurers. The camping safaris that we offer are suited for travelers between 18 to 65 and older, as well as a number of tours perfect for families for children under the age of 18. Whether you’re a young explorer seeking adrenaline pumping experiences or a seasoned traveler looking for a rejuvenating adventure, our Consultants will help you find the perfect option for you. If you’re worried about age restrictions on tours, do not fear as your consultant will ensure they pair you with a tour that fits your fitness level. While our tours involve moderate physical activity, such as game drives, long hours between different destinations along various terrain and bush walks, we do try to cater to travelers of all ages. Should you have specific requirements or concerns, please do not hesitate enquire with us.

During an African camping safari, you will stay in large two-man dome canvas tents which are spacious enough for two adults and your luggage. Or, you can opt to have your own personal tent by including the single supplement (valid on select camping tours).

Your tents are put up and taken down easily – your Tour Leader will show you exactly how to do this and help out when you are unsure. All tents are well-ventilated using a tent door and window, covered with mosquito net. They also include a fly-sheet for the rain.

Most camping safaris include a sleeping mat so you only need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towel. The African campsites are basic and comfortable. Most have warm showers and flushing ablutions, while others may have natural ablutions.

2. The Accommodated Overland tour option

Accommodated overland is ideal for travelers who prefer to experience African wildlife and adventure with extra comforts. An accommodated tour means that you will be staying in permanent tents or lodges. You are surrounded by vast landscapes and wildlife, curiously roaming at your doorstep. It is comfortable, without the price tag.

Our accommodated safaris make use of a combination of lodges, hostels, bungalows, chalets, permanent safari camps, hotels and traditional huts. Our properties are ideally located at each destination for an authentic experience with incredible views.

We book Twin rooms if you are travelling with a partner or friend and Single rooms for single travelers (including single supplement). Most of the time we stay in 1-3 star properties with en-suite bathrooms in Southern Africa. In Eastern Africa, we offer a combination of en-suite and shared bathrooms. In the case of shared bathrooms, you will be sharing with friends on your tour.

Select accommodated safaris include a camp assistant to help out with the smaller aspects of your vacation.

The standard of the properties varies along the trip. The Southern African properties are much more established than the East African accommodation. They vary from basic (but comfortable) to lovely properties. Due to the remote nature of the trips, accommodation choices are limited.

3. The Small Group Tour option

Why not choose an African safari with a personal touch and book a small group tour?

Our small group tours travel with a group maximum of 12 to 16 travelers, offering a more personalised African adventure. We have a variety of camping and accommodated tours through Southern and East Africa.

These unique small group tours use standard vehicles, and with a limited group size you are ensured to enjoy more space on the vehicle, comfort and a one-on-one experience with fellow travelers and your crew.

We make use of exclusive private campsites (camping tours) interspersed with lodges and bungalows (accommodated tours). A minimum amount of participation will be required, but most importantly we want you to relax and enjoy your trip.
