Volunteer in Zimbabwe: Safeguard Endangered Species & Empower Communities. Join our unique wildlife conservation volunteer program at Imire, a dedicated family-run conservancy nestled in the heart of Zimbabwe, and play a vital role in protecting endangered black and white rhinos and majestic elephants. This unparalleled opportunity allows you to work alongside local employees, collaborate with anti-poaching units, and engage directly with community members on diverse projects, ensuring the long-term future of Zimbabwe’s iconic wildlife and simultaneously supporting thriving rural communities.
Nestled just 90 minutes from Harare, Imire Conservancy offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in Zimbabwean wildlife conservation. This privately owned haven is passionately dedicated to the welfare and protection of its inhabitants, with a critical focus on the breeding and safeguarding of the critically endangered black and white rhinoceros. Here, living truly means being up close and personal with the wild; imagine waking to the authentic sounds of the African bush, or enjoying your breakfast alongside a curious giraffe. At Imire, these extraordinary, intimate wildlife encounters don’t just happen – they become your daily reality, directly connecting you to vital conservation efforts.
Nestled within the remarkable Imire Conservancy, your volunteer accommodation offers two distinct and comfortable experiences, each hosting a maximum of 12 dedicated individuals. Settle into either Chiwawe Tented Camp, providing fixed safari-style tents for an authentic wilderness immersion right in the heart of the conservancy, or embrace the farmhouse charm of Numwa House, complete with a refreshing swimming pool. Both sites ensure a restful stay with shared, same-sex rooms (matched by age where possible), equipped with private bathrooms, toilets, showers, and all essential bedding. Your impactful days are fueled by three delicious, self-serve home-cooked meals daily, featuring a varied menu of local and international cuisines. While we proudly cater to vegetarian and vegan preferences and accommodate other dietary allergies (with advance notice), please note that highly specific requirements (like severe gluten, dairy, or wheat intolerances) may necessitate bringing your own specialist foods, which our chefs will gladly prepare alongside standard meals. It is crucial to inform us of all dietary needs before arrival, and importantly, this project is not suitable for individuals with severe peanut allergies, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all.
Stay connected during your impactful Zimbabwean conservation experience at Imire Conservancy’s comfortable accommodation sites, both offering convenient pay-as-you-go WiFi access. While cellphone and 3G coverage can be sporadic within the conservancy, we recommend purchasing an Econet SIM card upon arrival in Zimbabwe for more consistent connectivity. Embrace the authentic African rhythm, understanding that power outages are a common occurrence, especially during rainy seasons. Rest assured, we’re well-equipped with solar-powered lighting and a generator that operates briefly each morning and evening. Plan to charge your devices during these essential periods to ensure full battery life, allowing you to capture every unforgettable moment of your wildlife conservation journey
Your incredible Zimbabwean wildlife conservation adventure begins with your arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) in Harare on a Monday. To ensure a seamless start, please schedule your flight to land no later than 1 PM, allowing you to comfortably connect with the complimentary shuttle transfer included in your project fee. We highly recommend avoiding Sunday evening arrivals, as this would necessitate booking additional overnight accommodation and returning to the airport the following day. While private transfers can be arranged for an extra cost, planning your travel to align with our complimentary shuttle ensures a smooth and effortless commencement to your impactful volunteer experience.
At the very heart of our impactful conservation and community efforts in Zimbabwe is Judy Travers, the guiding spirit of the Imire family. Her unwavering dedication and compassionate leadership form the bedrock of every initiative, tirelessly championing the welfare of both magnificent wildlife and vibrant local communities. Judy embodies the essence of an exemplary leader, role model, and nurturing figure, inspiring positive change. Her boundless energy and profound commitment to the greater good serve as a powerful beacon, fostering a deep connection between humans and nature that extends far beyond Imire’s boundaries.
Maintaining the highest standards of safety and support is paramount across all our Zimbabwe volunteer projects. Our two decades of unparalleled success in running impactful programs throughout Africa are built on an unwavering commitment to safeguarding every volunteer, staff member, and local community. From the moment your adventure begins at arrival until its triumphant conclusion, we meticulously ensure your comfort and security as you contribute to vital conservation efforts in Zimbabwe. For complete peace of mind, we invite you to review our comprehensive health and safety protocols, or simply contact us with any specific questions.
