This will be at your own expense. You can look forward to 360° views of the city, the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island. We will then descend and take a tour of the peninsula via Hout Bay and Chapman’s Peak to the Table Mountain National Park. Here you can walk around Cape Point (the southwestern tip of Africa). We then take another scenic route passing through Simon’s Town which is a delightful quaint naval village named after Simon van der Stel, the Dutch governor of the Cape Colony. With time hopefully on our side we can visit Boulder’s Beach with its cute colony of penguins (own expense) before carrying on our route via Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg.
Dinner tonight can be enjoyed at one of the vibey Waterfront restaurants (own expense).

Day 4: Augrabies Falls National Park, Northern Cape
Departing from the Little Karoo we make our way north into the Green Kalahari area, named so due to the dense plant life along the Orange River as well as the plentiful evergreen Acacia Areolaba (Camelthorn trees) located in this region, through to Augrabies Falls National Park. Here, the majestic Orange River plunges 56 metres into the gorge below . This is the sixth biggest waterfall in the world. The local name for these Falls is Aukoerebis or ‘place of great noise’. The gorge at Augrabies is 240 metres deep and 18 kilometres in length. Due to the arid landscape there is not much game viewing here, but you will have the chance to spot a Rock Hyrax (Dassie) or two, which is the closest living relative to the African elephant. Our afternoon is spent admiring the gorgeous Falls from all angles.

Its sparse vegetation creates a stage for extraordinary predator encounters, notably the iconic black-maned lion. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the desert’s magic with a captivating 2-hour pre-sunset walk, led by an expert field guide. Delve into the geology, flora, and fauna of the dunes, and perhaps meet our resident meerkat family. We will be travelling through quite an arid area where the rainfall is less than 10ml. The Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world and the largest in Africa. The river usually floods in the late Summer, but for the rest of the year it forms long, narrow pools. In the afternoon we go for a glorious sunset walk around the rim of the canyon.

Days 8 – 9: Sesriem/ Sossusvlei, Namibia
Our tour will bring us north through various landscapes, to our camp that is situated on the rim of the Namib Desert. This is known amongst some geologists as being one of the oldest deserts in the world.
The next morning we leave early and drive 55km through the dune belt while the sun rises. The ever-changing hues make for spectacular photographs. We will then set off on a 5km walk to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. Sossusvlei roughly means ‘dead end marsh’. The marsh holds rainwater that forms a lake and due to the fact that there is a high clay content, water is retained for long periods of time.
Deadvlei is another clay pan about 2km from Sossusvlei which used to be an oasis with several acacia trees. As a result it is dotted with blackened, dead acacia trees which stands out against the salty floor of the pan and the dark orange dunes. We will take a short hike through the Sesriem Canyon which is made up of sedimentary rock about a kilometre long and 30 metres deep. Animals frequent this area using it as a waterhole.
